Vocabulary sticks when kids move around to find it. This printable fruit scavenger hunt hides 10 numbered illustrated cards — pineapple, apple, orange, strawberry, banana, watermelon, kiwi, pear, grapes, and mango — around the classroom and sends students searching, reading aloud, and recording what they find.

The words span a satisfying range of difficulty. Short familiar ones like pear and kiwi sit alongside multi-syllable words like pineapple, strawberry, and watermelon, making this theme a natural fit for differentiated spelling practice as well as vocabulary building. Students who can already read the simple fruit words are pushed by the longer ones; students who are just building sight word familiarity have short anchor words to find first.

How the Scavenger Hunt Works

The routine is simple and repeatable: hide the 10 fruit cards around the room, let students find them one by one, say the fruit word aloud, and record their answer on the worksheet. Cards stay in place throughout the hunt so the activity runs without constant teacher management. Use it individually, in pairs, or as a whole-class team game.

Three Card Versions Included

Color cards are fully illustrated and ready to print, cut, and play.
Black & white cards let students color the fruit image before the hunt — a quick, purposeful pre-activity that builds word-to-image connection.
Template cards show only the fruit name; students read it and draw the fruit themselves before cutting and playing, which deepens vocabulary through illustration.
The challenge option, available in both color and B&W sets, removes all word labels so students write the fruit name from memory when they find the card — a meaningful push for learners ready for independent spelling practice across all 10 words.

Four Differentiated Worksheets

The simple checklist is the most accessible entry point: students find each card and check it off the fruit word list — suitable for beginning readers and students who need maximum support.
The image-only checklist replaces all text with illustrated pictures of each fruit; students match card to picture without any word recognition requirement, making it ideal for pre-readers and ESL learners.
The writing list asks students to find each fruit card, write the word, and color the image — a three-step activity that combines vocabulary, spelling, and fine motor practice.
The letter-count worksheet is the most rigorous: students find the word, count its letters, write it, and color — excellent phonics reinforcement when working with the range from kiwi (4 letters) up to strawberry (10) and watermelon (10).

Storage & Progress Tracking

The printable color-coded storage box — a fold-and-glue card envelope — keeps all 10 fruit cards organized and ready to use again. A student progress tracker is included to help you log which worksheet level each student is working at.

Part of the 20-Theme Learning System

Fruit is one of 20 themes in the Vocabulary & Phonics Scavenger Hunt Learning System by Craftytopia Creations. Every theme follows the same Hide → Find → Record routine. Once your students know the routine, you can swap to vegetables, weather, farm animals, sea animals, the solar system, and more without re-teaching a single expectation. One routine, all year long.
